A pioneering project to develop a Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre in Gleadless and Heeley in Sheffield has been shortlisted in the first NHS Excellence Awards.
The Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust project has been selected as a regional champion in the patient involvement and choice category in the new awards programme and now becomes part of a shortlist from which national winners will be chosen at an awards ceremony held in June.
The project represents the only shortlisted award for any NHS Trust in South Yorkshire.
The NHS Excellence Awards are the only awards run by, and for, the NHS. The awards shine a light on local teams, projects and individuals who are driving improvements, with the aim of sharing learning and inspiring others to adopt successful approaches in their own areas.
The project
The Gleadless and Heeley Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre is a new place where people can get help with their mental health. It will open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and offer services without the need for referral, to help people feel better and stay well. The centre will be open to everyone in the local community.
It is a pilot programme funded by NHS England.
Sheffield Partnership and partners have co‑produced the project by listening to more than 500 residents, service users and staff. Since it was announced in August 2024 the project has built trust with local communities, strengthened partnerships across health and the voluntary sector, and is already reducing hospital stays and out‑of‑area placements. The completed centre is due to open later this Spring.
