Local health experts are advising people not to leave it until the last minute to order and collect repeat prescriptions before the bank holiday (Monday 28 August).

NHS South Yorkshire is encouraging people to check their current medication to see if they have enough to last over the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

Most pharmacies and GP surgeries will be running reduced opening hours on Monday, however some will remain open. A full list of participating pharmacies, including opening hours, can be found on the NHS website here.

Residents are also reminded to use NHS 111 when their GP practice is closed.  The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and can be accessed online or by phone. If you are unsure which service you need, or want to speak to a trained expert, call 111 or visit NHS 111 online (https://111.nhs.uk/.

Dr David Crichton, Medical Director of NHS South Yorkshire said: “We want to ensure that anyone with long-term health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease, enjoys the extended break and doesn’t run out of their essential medicines.

“It only takes a few minutes to collect prescriptions or over-the-counter remedies so if you take regular medications or need to stock up your medicine cabinet please plan ahead so you can enjoy your break.

“Bank holidays can be a very busy time for the local NHS, so picking up a repeat prescription in advance, and knowing which services are available, could help to keep staff free to deal with life-threatening emergencies.”

A lot of illnesses and symptoms can be treated in your home by making use of a well-stocked medicine cabinet and by getting plenty of rest. Keep a stock of essential medicines such as: aspirin, paracetamol, anti-diarrhoeal medicine, cough medicine, plasters, thermometer and antiseptic cream.
