NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) is responsible for making sure they have the right GP services for people across South Yorkshire.
The ICB is currently consulting on the future of Harold Street Medical Centre in Sheffield. After the previous GP and sole contract holder sadly retired from Harold Street Medical Centre due to ill health in June 2023, NHS South Yorkshire gave a contract to Primary Care Sheffield to provide GP services from the practice for 24 months.
NHS South Yorkshire now need to complete an assessment of the needs of the local population and develop proposals for the future.
There are a number of issues NHS South Yorkshire need to consider. Harold Street Medical Centre is a small general practice with fewer than 3,000 registered patients which is a much less than the national average of over 9,000 patients per practice. There are also several other practices nearby. This may make it difficult to find a provider willing to take over the contract.
In addition, a planned housing development nearby and in the city centre will lead to a significant increase in population in the area over the next 10 years and local GP practice premises will not have enough space to accommodate this increase in patients.
Dr Zak McMurray, Medical Director for Sheffield at NHS South Yorkshire said:
“We need to ensure that our general practices have sufficient capacity and are located in the right places to meet the needs of the current and future population in the area. To help us make the best decisions for local people we would like to hear from patients registered at the practice. You can have your say by completing the patient survey online at or by completing a paper copy available from the practice. The survey is also available in Somali and Arabic.”
Involvement activity will take place from 2 December 2024 to 13 January 2025.
