Local residents are being encouraged to take steps to a healthy new year and stay fit by using some simple and effective health tips.

NHS South Yorkshire is supporting Public Health England’s Better Health campaign that’s aimed to help support people towards a healthier lifestyle this year, whether it’s losing weight, getting more active, looking after their mental wellbeing, or quitting smoking.

The new year can be a great time to find motivation to reduce or quit smoking and alcohol intake, with the added incentive of knowing that many others are also doing it. Small changes to introduce healthier choices can make it easier to turn these behaviours into longer term habits.

The Better Health campaign supports individuals on their weight loss journey, the 12-week personalised guide will be created based on your current BMI and health goals. With this, you will be able to make simple changes to your regular food and exercise regime. Small changes make a big difference and are much more manageable.

Dr David Crichton, Medical Officer at NHS South Yorkshire said “The time of year is often a time when we look to make some positive changes and introduce new habits. We know that these changes can help to improve our health and wellbeing.

“On Better Health, there are a variety of free NHS endorsed apps, resources and online tools to help people introduce simple changes that will help them eat better and get active this new year, including the NHS Weight Loss Plan, Couch to 5K and Active 10 apps to help support you through your journey so you can be as healthy and independent as possible.”

“The Better Health campaign is a great way to access support to lose weight, get active, quit smoking and take care of your mind in 2024. By taking better care of your body can also lead to better mental health as well as physical, it’s not all about focusing on weight loss.”

Better Health helps people prevent risks of developing serious illness and offers support through a variety of tools and apps, including the updated NHS 12 Week Weight Loss app.
