A free innovative digital service – Stride – is welcoming approximately 300 people who live in Barnsley to its 12-week health, nutrition and fitness programme this November.

Aimed at those who are 55 and over, the programme works with participants to give them the tools they need to eat well, stay active and to look after their mental wellbeing, enabling them to protect their strength and independence for the future. 

The service will take participants through a guided learning experience where they will access one-to-one phone calls with a lifestyle coach, and be given a range of helpful tips and activities developed by dieticians, lifestyle experts and physiotherapists.

As part of the journey, those involved will be encouraged to set personal goals and track their progress through the dedicated online Stride platform that can be accessed through a mobile, tablet or computer.

Dr Jamie Macinnes, GP at The Dove Valley Practice in Barnsley said: “Stride is a new project that is helping the Barnsley population stay healthier for longer.

“It’s been developed by health professionals to help those living in Barnsley take a more proactive approach to their health and wellbeing as we know this can help prevent conditions such as frailty.”

Phil Hall, who is retired from Barnsley who has used the service said: “You’ll be surprised at what you can do and what Stride does for your physical and mental health”.

The programme has been developed in partnership with local NHS and public health professionals to promote healthy ageing and to postpone the onset of conditions such as frailty.
