NHS South Yorkshire and Mental Health Matters have opened a new out-of-hours mental health and emotional support service that is open every day for people in Sheffield.
The Sheffield Support Hub provides free, out-of-hours mental health support to residents aged 16 and over, in a safe, comfortable, and non-judgemental environment.
Jane Hughes, CEO of Mental Health Matters, said: “The new Support Hub offers a safe place for anyone feeling distressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, at a time when they may be unable to access other services. We are pleased to welcome so many members of the community to our launch event, ensuring people know where they can access support in their time of need.”
The Hub, located on Bank Street, provides support 365 days a year, 6pm until midnight, Monday to Friday, and 2pm until midnight, Saturday to Sunday, when other services are often closed.
The friendly staff team at the Support Hub provide emotional, social and practical support to individuals who are experiencing mental and emotional ill health or who are at risk of developing a mental health crisis. This is also a space for people to access advice, guidance, and information to support their mental health and wellbeing.
Dr Steve Thomas, Sheffield GP and Clinical Director for Mental Health, at NHS South Yorkshire said, “We are pleased to be able to offer Sheffield people a mental health support hub for anyone over 16 in mental health distress or wanting to support their mental wellbeing. Since the pandemic we have seen a marked increase in people needing to access mental health support. We hope that this new service will mean that people who need to can talk to a trained mental health worker to access the support they need, in a relaxed and comfortable environment, avoiding having to wait for a GP appointment or at urgent or emergency care centres.”
There is no need for a referral or an appointment and individuals can drop in to access support face-to-face, over the phone or online via video call.
The Hub however does not provide medical or physical treatments and people may still need to access other appropriate services.
