Over 800 children and adults from 16 Schools attended an interactive health and social care careers event on Wednesday 20 November.

The ‘We care into the future’ event invited students to learn about the vast array of careers within health and social care.

We Care Into the Future is an innovation born from the partnership between Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals and its Foundation School in Health partners in Doncaster and Worksop. The Trust is proud to extend the format to partner organisations and providers, helping to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Students were offered detailed insights into the working world of healthcare aided by simulated situations in the ‘Simulation Corridor’ and interactive stands.

On entering the simulation corridor, the students first encountered the paramedic crew dealing with injuries and preparing the patient for transfer to the Emergency Department following a road traffic accident, offering them a learning experience in how the situation would be dealt with from start to finish.

Students had the opportunity to visit 65 stands that showcased some of the over 350 health and social care careers, they fed back how they enjoyed the number of stands and the opportunity to speak to professionals and learn about their career journeys.

The event had a lively atmosphere thanks to the active levels of participation and the students’ eagerness to learn that health and social care is more than doctors and nurses.

After the event students were asked if they would now consider roles within health and social care, with 60% saying they would consider health and social care as a career when asked.

Wendy Lowder, Barnsley Place Lead for NHS South Yorkshire said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to demonstrate to these young people just how many career opportunities there are within health and social care

“For these young people to get the chance to see how their skills and interests could apply to a potential career within the NHS or Local Government is truly invaluable.

“We need to inspire the next generations to come and join us and events like ‘We Care Into the Future’ do just that.”

From 106 student responses the event earned a brilliant 4.64 out of 5 average rating showcasing the success and brilliant work of all those involved.
