Barnsley's pulmonary rehabilitation service has been recognised nationally for good practice in supporting people with long-term lung conditions.
The team from South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) were highlighted as a positive example by the Royal College of Physicians’ National Respiratory Audit Programme (NRAP) after 100% of patients were able to start pulmonary rehabilitation within 90 days of their referral in both 2022 and 2023.
The pulmonary rehabilitation service delivers specialist assessment, planning and care to encourage and support patients through a 6 – 8 week programme of exercise and education, helping them to achieve and maintain optimal physical and psychological health. The team offers group-based exercise sessions or individual home programmes.
The National Respiratory Audit Programme for England and Wales aims to improve the quality of care, services, and clinical outcomes for people with respiratory disease.
The team are one of just nine across the country selected by NRAP as an exemplary case study.
Director of Services Gill Stansfield said: “I’m very proud of the team’s hard work and dedication, and to be recognised nationally is a fantastic achievement. Very few services across the country are asked to represent best practice in an NRAP case study, so for the team to be selected is testament to their efforts in improving the health and wellbeing of local people.”
