Older people and those with a weakened immune system are being encouraged to book their COVID-19 spring vaccination.

COVID-19 spreads easily all year round. It can still be very dangerous and even life threatening, particularly for older people and those with a weakened immune system.

In line with expert advice, the vaccination will be offered to the following groups this spring:

  • adults aged 75 years and over (including individuals who turn 75 years old by 30 June 2026)

  • residents in a care home for older adults

  • those aged 6 months and over with a weakened immune system

If you are eligible, you will be invited to come forward but you do not need to wait for this to book your appointment.

Dr David Crichton, Chief Medical Officer at NHS South Yorkshire said: “I would encourage anyone that is eligible to get their COVID-19 vaccine.

“The vaccine provides vital protection against different strains of the Covid virus and helps reduce the risk of serious illness or needing to go to hospital if you do catch it.

“Residents in older adult care homes, adults who are 75 or over and people who are immunosuppressed are particularly vulnerable to complications from COVID-19

“It is important to keep up to date with your vaccines, as viruses change and protection fades over time. The best way to protect yourself is through vaccination.”

Getting your COVID-19 vaccine is very convenient, with thousands of appointments available across South Yorkshire at GP practices and community pharmacies.

Local NHS teams have been working to make it as easy as possible for people to get vaccinated close to home, as well as organising visits to older adult care homes and eligible housebound patients.

For those that receive all their care at home, a home visit should be arranged via their GP or they will be contacted by a designated community pharmacist.

If you, or your child, are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine this spring, make sure you come forward for this extra protection available now. The final day to book your vaccine is 29 June 2026 with vaccines available till 30 June 2026.

How to get the vaccine:

  • Download the NHS App and make an appointment

  • Speak to your GP practice

  • Call 119 for free if you can’t get online (translators are available)

If you get your care at home, ask your GP surgery about vaccination. They will be able to arrange a visit or advise you which community pharmacy has been arranged for your area.

Anyone eligible who has not received any previous doses should still get vaccinated during this year’s spring offer, to help protect against serious illness.
