A long-serving nurse from Barnsley Hospital enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience after being invited to attend a Royal Garden Party.
Sue Spence, Nurse Manager for Patient Flow, Discharge Teams and Acorn at Barnsley Hospital, was nominated to attend this prestigious event in recognition of her dedicated service to the NHS. Sue, who began her career as a student nurse in January 1990, is now in her 37th year at the Trust and has spent decades supporting patients and colleagues across the organisation.
She said: “I feel incredibly honoured to have been nominated. I didn’t actually see the nomination myself, but I believe it was put forward by my line manager in recognition of my service to the NHS. It’s such a special moment.”
The Royal Garden Party took place in London on Wednesday (6 May), bringing together guests from across the country who have made a positive contribution to their communities.
A lifelong fan of London and the Royal Family, Sue said she is especially excited about the opportunity.
“I’m a massive fan of London and the Royals, so this really does mean a lot to me,” she added. “It’s something I never imagined I’d experience.”
Sue was accompanied by her daughter, making the occasion even more meaningful for the family. The pair previously shared a memorable royal moment when they queued alongside relatives for 14 hours in 2022 to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as she lay in state.
Sue added: “My daughter is just as excited as I am. It was such a special day for us both to share.”
Lorraine Burnett, Chief Operating Officer at Barnsley Hospital said: “Sue has dedicated many years to our hospital and represents the best of Barnsley. She is kind, caring and compassionate to patients and staff.
“This is very much deserved and I hope she had a great day.”
Sue’s invitation recognises not only her long service, but also the care and dedication she has shown to patients and colleagues throughout her career.
