NHS South Yorkshire recently hosted the first South Yorkshire-wide Diabetes Summit, bringing together local health and care organisations to tackle the issues the region is facing around diabetes in South Yorkshire.
The ‘Prevention is Better than the Cure’ diabetes summit was held at Rotherham’s New York Stadium and saw South Yorkshire’s key players in diabetes prevention gather to work through the difficult challenges South Yorkshire is facing, including prevention, inequalities and improving the experience of care for those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Dr David Crichton, Chief Medical Officer at NHS South Yorkshire said: “We’re bringing together a range of partners and organisations to respond to the challenge we have of diabetes in South Yorkshire. We’re particularly looking at inequalities. Diabetes doesn’t affect us equally; we have communities in the region where we need a more targeted approach to prevent those most at risk from developing diabetes in the future.”
Dr Elizabeth Uchegbu, Diabetes Clinical Lead at NHS South Yorkshire said: “We know people are facing inequalities in terms of both access to the diabetes prevention programme and the care process, and sadly, we also see inequalities in terms of diabetes-related amputations across South Yorkshire. We’re bringing people here today to work together to find out what drives these inequalities and what we can do to correct it.”
