People with a weakened immune system are being urged to come forward for their COVID-19 spring vaccination, with just two weeks remaining to book an appointment before the programme closes.
COVID-19 continues to circulate throughout the year and can still cause serious illness, particularly for people whose immune systems are weakened due to a health condition or treatment. Vaccination remains the best way to reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation and complications from the virus.
In line with expert advice, the COVID-19 spring vaccination is being offered to:
- people aged 6 months and over with a weakened immune system
- adults aged 75 years and over (including those who turn 75 by 30 June 2026)
- residents in a care home for older adults
If you are eligible, you do not need to wait for an invitation before booking your appointment.
Dr David Crichton, Chief Medical Officer at NHS South Yorkshire, said:
“With just two weeks left to book a COVID-19 spring vaccination, I would encourage everyone who is eligible to come forward as soon as possible.
“People who are immunosuppressed are at greater risk of becoming seriously unwell from COVID-19. Even if you have had vaccinations before, protection can reduce over time and viruses continue to evolve.
“This extra dose helps boost your protection against the virus and can significantly reduce the risk of serious illness, complications and hospital admission.
“Older people and residents in older adult care homes also remain at increased risk from COVID-19, so it is important that everyone eligible takes up the offer before the programme ends.”
Getting your COVID-19 vaccine is quick and convenient, with thousands of appointments available across South Yorkshire at GP practices and community pharmacies.
Local NHS teams have been working to make it as easy as possible for people to get vaccinated close to home, including organising visits to older adult care homes and eligible housebound patients.
For those who receive all their care at home, a home visit should be arranged through their GP practice or they will be contacted by a designated community pharmacist.
If you, or your child, are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine this spring, make sure you come forward for this extra protection while it is still available.
The final day to book your vaccine is 29 June 2026, with vaccinations available until 30 June 2026.
