In May we are proud to celebrate International Day of the Midwife (5 May) and International Nurses Day (12 May).

Every year, International Day of the Midwife is an opportunity to recognise the contribution of midwives, alongside nursing associates and midwifery students.

Midwives deliver expert, compassionate and person‑centred care across a wide range of settings, providing leadership, supporting choice and safety, and driving innovation in research, education and practice.

Their work supports people at some of the most important moments of their lives and places midwifery at the heart of communities and the wider health and care system.

The celebrations continued on 12 May for International Nurses Day, when we recognise nurses, nursing associates and nursing students for the difference they make to people’s lives every single day.

From community services and primary care to hospitals, social care and specialist services, nurses in South Yorkshire provide high‑quality care, clinical leadership and expertise across every sector and setting.

Cathy Winfield, Chief Nursing Officer, NHS South Yorkshire said:

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank midwives and nurses across South Yorkshire to recognise the extraordinary dedication, skill and compassion they show every day.

“Their commitment to delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care makes an invaluable difference to patients, families and communities across our region.”

The essential contribution of both professions is reflected in the NHS’s 10 Year Health Plan, which recognises nursing and midwifery as central to driving improvements across health and care.

Nurses and midwives are leading the way in three fundamental shifts set out in the plan: moving care from hospitals into communities, harnessing technology to work smarter, and preventing ill health.
