The Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence designation recognises and awards adult neuro-oncology centres that provide excellent treatment, care and research opportunities for patients with brain tumours and provides targeted support to centres to improve and develop services.
The department is one of fourteen centres across the UK to receive the excellence status this year, following extensive assessment of the services and feedback collected from almost 1500 patients by The Brain Tumour Charity.
Mr Veejay Bagga, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said “We are honoured to be recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence. This award is testament to the neuro-oncology teams' commitment and dedication to delivering excellent patient-centred care. Our partnership with the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission will allow continued development of our service, ensuring a high standard of care is maintained and delivered to our patients. Importantly, patients can be reassured that they are receiving outstanding care in a centre of excellence.”
Jess Mills, Tessa Jowell’s daughter and the co-founder of TJBCM, said: “Mum’s legacy to transform outcomes for brain cancer patients across the UK has reached another huge milestone. It has been so moving to witness how committed the teams caring for patients are to come on this journey with us.”
Lord Darzi, who led the review of the NHS in England in 2024, said: “The award of 14 new Centres of Excellence is a fitting tribute to Dame Tessa Jowell and her dedication to improving treatment and care for patients with a brain tumour. This programme shows the NHS at its very best, highlighting teams across the country that are working tirelessly to improve their services and deliver excellent care.”
