Patients across South Yorkshire who are registered with a GP surgery can access a range of health services online to enable them to order repeat prescriptions, book appointments, contact a healthcare professional for advice and support as well as being able to view their GP health record.

From 1 November 2023 a greater number of patients across the area are able to access their GP health record enabling them to see all new entries to their record including consultation notes, medicines and immunisations.

Those aged 16 and over and have an online account, such as the NHS App, NHS website, or other GP online services and apps, will now automatically be able to see all future information entered on their medical record from appointments, as well as test results and any letters that are saved on their records.

These changes only apply to people with online accounts who will be able to access their own personal information. For those who do not want an online account, can still access their GP health record by requesting this information at their GP practice.

Carers who would like to access information about someone they care for will require proxy access and will need to speak to the GP practice.

Dr David Crichton, local GP and Chief Medical Officer from NHS South Yorkshire said “Patients can access their GP record by logging into their account using the NHS app or the NHS website. This service allows you to view your GP medical record securely over the internet from a computer or smart phone, free of charge.

“By accessing your GP record online, patients can view important information such as consultation notes, letters and test results at a time that is convenient to them which can help some feel more supported and control of their health and care”.

“The service is completely voluntary; treatment will not be affected in any way for anyone who does not wish to use the service”.

For most people, access will be automatic, and you won't need to do anything. If anyone is concerned about seeing their health records, they can opt-out by contacting their GP practice.

The NHS App, website and other online services are all very secure.  Patients are reminded not to share passwords with anyone to protect their personal information.
