Medicines Waste campaign toolkit for GP practices and pharmacies
NHS South Yorkshire has launched a Medicines Waste campaign to encourage people to:
- return any unwanted medicines to a pharmacy
- only order the medicines they need
- check their medicines bag before they leave their pharmacy
- tell their GP if they no longer want/need a medication
A toolkit has been developed for our regional health and care partners to help share the campaign through relevant communications channels, including social media accounts, websites and any internal/external bulletins. It also includes posters, a video for waiting room TVs and suggested text messages for patients. You can access the toolkit on the ICB website here Campaigns :: South Yorkshire I.C.B.
Thank you for your support and we hope that you find the toolkit useful.

South Yorkshire Palliative and End of Life Care Webpages Launched
Following engagement with members of the public, patients and their families, NHS South Yorkshire have developed comprehensive webpages about palliative and end of life care in South Yorkshire. Information contained in the webpages is a response to what members of the public and professionals told us they needed.
The webpages can be accessed here: https://southyorkshire.icb.nhs.uk/your-health/palliative-and-end-life-care.
The webpages aim to provide practical information to help people who are at the end of their lives, and those supporting people, to access the right information at the right time.
Information is for use across South Yorkshire – in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
The pages contain
-
Materials you may want to use for planning ahead, and information on ReSPECT
-
Support available, including specialist services
-
Details on where to seek support and advice
-
Bereavement & grief information
There is also a dedicated area on the webpages for health & social care professionals:
-
You can use the dedicated professionals area to find materials you may want to use when supporting a person and /or a carer - offering links to support services and information to share e.g. on advance care planning, ReSPECT and bereavement & grief.
-
Pages can be translated at a click of a button.
-
Pages can be printed off and given to those you are supporting.
-
Pages contain training information.
We would appreciate your support in sharing these webpages with people you support and your colleagues. If you have any questions about the webpages, please submit these via this online form: Palliative and End Of Life Care webpages - South Yorkshire and we will aim to respond within 5 working days.

Updated DASH risk assessment and Police Disclosure

Professionals need to contact the police directly for prompt support for those experiencing high-risk domestic abuse. People disclosing domestic abuse that puts them at risk of life-altering harm or death need to be referred to MARAC. Unfortunately, there is a 10-week waiting list before cases are discussed at MARAC. This leaves people vulnerable to ongoing abuse and harm. The police need to be informed directly so that interventions can be made to reduce this.
The same MARAC information-sharing rules apply, so the details can be shared without consent to protect the person. Please note that an updated version of the DASH risk assessment is now available and must be used. Further details on how to make a police disclosure can be found on Page 8 of the DASH risk assessment.

NHS Interim Management and Support (IMAS) offer

NHS IMAS has supported health organisations by resourcing and deploying experienced leaders on short and medium-term assignments. Expressions of interest are welcome from experienced senior NHS staff ready to work at senior levels within primary care settings.
Joining the talent pool offers a range of benefits, including system-wide exposure, exciting stretch assignments and learning and development opportunities. View a leaflet or contact 0113 486 0132 for more information.
Fire service offers free online home safety advice

As part of a new campaign, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is urging the public to carry out a free online home safety check to help families protect themselves from accidental fires.
The free tool, which can be accessed through the Service's website, takes you through your home one room at a time and asks simple questions to help you spot fire risks as you go around your home.
The tool offers tips and advice on the steps you can take to reduce those risks. At the end, individuals will receive a personalised fire safety action plan to help keep their household safe from fire.
Then, if eligible for a home visit, they will be asked to submit their contact details so that this can be arranged.
Updates
Vacancies in Primary Care Networks and Federations

You will be aware that the ICB will be undergoing significant changes over the next six months, and as an employer, we are committed to ensuring that we look after our staff as part of these changes. As part of retaining talent within the health system, we currently work with acute and community and Mental Health providers to share appropriate vacancy information as it arises. We hope that you will be able to do the same as these arise in your organisations and networks. Please contact syicb.communications@nhs.net to share any vacancies you wish to advertise.
Extended Cervical Screening Intervals
On 10 June, Minister Dalton announced the implementation of extended screening intervals for cervical screening participants.
Actions for sample takers, GP practice managers and screening providers:
- Ensure all patient-facing staff are aware of the changes so they can support individuals with any questions. Staff can reassure people that invitations will be sent automatically at the appropriate interval
- Sample takers are asked to inform participants of the interval change during their appointments on or after 1 July 2025
Reminder: changes to the online GP registration service in response to the Infected Blood Inquiry recommendations
Practices are reminded that from 16 June, updates to the online GP registration service will help identify patients potentially affected by contaminated blood, in line with recommendations from the Infected Blood Inquiry.
New patients born before 1996 who use the online GP registration service will be asked if they received a blood transfusion prior to that year. Where new patients indicate they have, GP practices should follow up during the new patient health check – or opportunistically to discuss, offer or signpost to hepatitis C testing.
Free home self-tests are available for patients to order on the hepctest.nhs.uk website. Guidance is available for GP practices to support this change.
New guidance and tools to help manage recurrent UTIs
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has updated its guidance for managing recurrent urinary tract infections.
To help healthcare professionals implement these changes, NHS England has collaborated with GPs, urologists, microbiologists and pharmacists to develop practical resources, including a ‘How to...’ booklet and consultation checklist. These materials are freely available on the Royal College of General Practitioners website.
A new NHS ePACT2 UTI dashboard has also been launched, enabling detailed analysis of prescribing patterns across demographics and healthcare levels, from GP practices to national data.
